Job Summary

The Long-Term Elementary Substitute Teacher will provide classroom instruction and support for an extended assignment from mid-December through the end of March. This position is responsible for maintaining continuity of instruction, implementing lesson plans and classroom routines, managing student behavior, and fostering a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment. The Long-Term Substitute Teacher works closely with school staff to support student learning and classroom success throughout the assignment.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties

• Provide daily instruction and classroom supervision throughout the long-term assignment.
• Follow and implement lesson plans, curriculum, and instructional materials provided by the school.
• Maintain a structured, engaging, and positive classroom environment.
• Establish and maintain classroom routines, expectations, and procedures.
• Monitor student progress and provide appropriate academic support.
• Manage student behavior using positive and consistent classroom management strategies.
• Take attendance and maintain accurate classroom records.
• Communicate with school staff regarding student needs, progress, and concerns.
• Collaborate with grade-level teachers, school leadership, and support staff.
• Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned activities.
• Follow school policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
• Leave the classroom organized and prepared for the following school day.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to respond appropriately to student safety and emergency situations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.
• Valid Michigan Substitute Teaching Permit or appropriate Michigan teaching certificate required, as applicable.
• K-5 Self Contained or 3-8 Self Contained
• Previous classroom or teaching experience preferred.
• Strong classroom management and communication skills.
• Ability to effectively implement lesson plans and maintain continuity of instruction.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with school staff.
• Dependable, organized, flexible, and committed to supporting student success.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
